One of my teachers said to me ‘self defence
is survival on land, just like swimming is survival in water’.
With this in mind, I developed the Women’s Self Defence
and Personal Safety Course in 1991 to highlight issues that are
important for both men and women; launching it in the US and later
pioneering the same program in South East Asia .

Our group constantly studies the myths surrounding
sexual crimes against women, statistics, and information relating
to defending yourself against an aggressor that is usually physically
stronger than you. This self defence information is then delivered
without dumbing down important messages or closing ourselves to
important questions.
Women Self Defence Perth - Sometimes Bad Things Aren't Always Done by Bad People!
I want to decrease the chance that you will be made a victim
in a violent crime. I want to help you not become a statistic
of a violent crime. This in fact will only take a few hours of
your time. Help me help you!
This self defence course is not a martial
arts course for women. Women self defence is about having a
physical and mental plan of action at times of which we call
'critical ambiguity'. Women are also likley to to face an entirely
different attacker to what the regular martial artist trains
for. Thus, the course incorporates expert information, statistics,
issues, and straightforward self-defence techniques to reduce
the probability of a serious assault on your person and to increase
your chances of survival. Still not sure? Download

Thought for the day - when you draw your sword, do not ask who you are going to kill, but ask who you are going to protect!

FAQs about Self Defence for Women in Perth
But there’s no way a woman untrained
can fight a man!
CW: Women’s Self Defence and Personal Safety
isn’t about pitting a woman against a man in a stand up
fight. There are many other issues from date rape drugs, to dealing
with mental intimidation, to learning how to fall properly, and
to defend yourself from a prone position. Many traditional martial
arts instructors are simply not equipped to handle these topics
and talk solely about physical self defence techniques.
How can I learn self defence in a one
day course?
CW: My course is designed to deliver simple and
effective strategic decision frameworks to get you immediately
thinking about the choices you make. These choices help you can
decrease the probability of a sexual or violent assault, improve
your initial reaction towards unwanted behaviour, and increase
the effectiveness of physical self defence. While it takes many
years to learn martial arts, you will leave the Women Self Defence
course with a plan of action, a collection of simple repeatable techniques, and
adopt a safety mindset that gives you the edge in a difficult
situation.
What inspired you to start this self
defence course?
CW: I started doing research into sexual or violent
assaults against women in 1991 as part of my black belt program
in the US. I brought the self defence course initially called
'Rape Awareness for Women' back to Singapore in mid 1992 and pioneered
it there with the auspices of the Association for Women for Action
and Research (AWARE) launched by MP Kanwaljit Soin. I never pursued
it as a business venture -
thus the infrequency of the course over the years. However, now
in running this program professionally I hope that the Women Self
Defence course would be readily available to as many people as
possible. In fact, I also regularly attend to international requests from instructors from all over the world who need help in setting up a similar women self defence course. So far I have directly helped trainers from New York, Dallas, England, and Africa.
Should I enrol in a martial arts or self
defence program?
CW: Depends on your objective for joining. Many
martial arts systems will only become effective after a student
trains for several years. Your best bet is to first educate yourself
on the issues of self defence, and to join a course similar to
the one that I have designed. Remember to choose an instructor
who is well informed, teaches you how to breakfall (or land on
the ground without hurting yourself), and who gives you links
to appropriate resources. Click here for a definition of
the difference between martial arts, self defence, and women's
self defence.
FYI, the most well known women self defence course in
Perth is provided by the Jan de Jong Martial Arts School. While Team
Wasabi provides a one-off course, Jan de Jong provides a self
defence course that spans about 6 weeks and charges approximately
$120 for each participant. From what I see, the Jan de Jong system
is a legitimate jujitsu-based martial arts system, and has been established in Perth for a long time.
Ultimately, whether you go to a martial arts
school like Jan de Jong or some place else, all participants must
expect their instructor to be familar with the pros and cons regarding
the subject. In essence, what else is there beyond physical self
defence?
Note: We are not affiliated to Jan de Jong and this is not a paid advertisement.
Why do you allow your lecture notes to be downloadable
online for free?
CW: There are a couple of reasons for this beyond
the fact that we're very confident in our ability to deliver a
value offering above and beyond the level of information you see
on the slideshow. We started out believing that all women have
the right to this information, and we're sticking to our guns
to provide this information to those of you who can't make it
to our physical course. Currently what you see online is actually a cut down version of the notes we use for commercial courses.
What should I do in event that something like this does
happen to me?
CW: The recommended course of action is to first
report any such incident immediately to the police, not to destroy
the items of clothing you were wearing during the incident, and
not to bathe before reporting the incident. Such evidence that
can be collected directly from you can be vital in apprehending
the perpetrator of the crime. When you are at the police station,
take time to collect your thoughts before providing a statement.
If you are unsure, exercise your right to postpone giving your
statement. Also remember the name of the officer you are dealing
with. This helps in your presenting coherant details.
