Self defence is not about martial arts. Self defence is not about fighting.
This is not to say that the martial arts cannot
be used for self defence. With the syllabus the martial artist
has to cover, an adequate practitioner can become a very versatile
fighter - in maybe 3-4 years.
Our self defence course is separate from our
regular martial arts training. This is a packaged offering to
train the user to become proficient in several self defence techniques
and mental strategies. This is in order for the participant to
gain an edge within approximately one month of formal and self-driven
training. The objective is twofold:
- To calm down a potentially violent opponent with verbal tools,
and
- To win a physical confrontation if you cannot de-escalate
the situation.
Does work place you in front of potentially aggressive
customers? Do you come into contact with intoxicated or violent
people? Do you deal with sensitive information that may upset
your clients? An abusive spouse or ex-partner? If you do, this
course is for you.
Note: This self defence course is not a
martial arts course. Self defence is about having a physical
and mental plan of action at times of which we call 'critical
ambiguity'. The course incorporates expert information, issues,
and straightforward self-defence techniques to reduce the probability
of a serious assault on your person and to increase your chances
of winning such an encounter. Still not sure? Download
the Effective Self Defence course notes here FREE.
Further Note: As we will be doing breakfalling
and ground techniques, participants to the Self Defence program
are advised to wear suitable attire to classes (such as loose
track pants).

FAQs about Effective Self Defence
in Perth
How can you learn self defence in such
a short time?
CW: Many expert martial artists would choose
the most basic techniques in times of need; those flashy hollywood
moves belong to the movies. We deal with effective drills and
mental strategies that give you an edge. These help reduce vaccilation,
and improves decision and reactions times. The techniques are
all simple, explainable, and best of all you can practice them
at home in your free time! In my 20 years of experience learning martial arts, this is one of the most innovative offerings a non-martial artist can take!
Do you think I can actually defend myself?
CW: The course will give you some level of confidence
and advice on what to do, what to avoid. Ultimately you need to
have your own confidence, or the 'desire to win', to prevail.
If you don't have that or can't achieve that, what chances do
you really have for winning?
Should I enrol in a martial arts or self
defence program?
CW: Depends on your objective for joining. Many
martial arts systems will only become effective after a student
trains for several years. Your best bet is to first educate yourself
on the issues of self defence, and to join a course similar to
the one that I have designed. Remember to choose an instructor
who is well informed, teaches you how to breakfall (or land on
the ground without hurting yourself), and who gives you links
to appropriate resources. Click here for a definition of
the difference between martial arts, self defence, and women's
self defence.
Why do you allow your lecture notes to
be downloadable online for free?
CW: There are a couple of reasons for this beyond
the fact that we're very confident in our ability to deliver a
value offering above and beyond the level of information you see
on the slideshow. We started out believing that everyone has the
right to this information, and we're sticking to our guns to provide
this information to those of you who can't make it to our physical
course.
