Taekwondo Lineage

The core structure of Hikaru Ryu which guides the progression of all students is taken from Jhoon Rhee's American Karate. American Karate originated from a Taekwondo style brought out from Korea between the 1950s and 1960s. This is a hard style that shows a distinct Shotokan Karate influence and has little in common with the Olympic style World Tae Kwon Do Federation. This form of Taekwondo places an equal emphasis on hands and leg techniques, rather than focusing solely on sophisticated kicking tactics.

In addition to this, students of Hikaru Ryu also are exposed to additional styles drawn from other arts that have influenced our instructors. These further tactics are chosen to complement our traditional framework. For instance, variations from other styles are explored to clarify the key combative lessons from patterns.

Hikaru Ryu has several objectives in the teaching of the martial arts:
  • Maintain a disciplined approached to preserving and communicating traditional techniques and their situational perspective.
  • To integrate a strategic framework into physical tactics, and to use strategic experience gained through the physical arts in application beyond the dojo.
  • Explore the innovative use of martial arts tactics in application to present day life and circumstances.

In terms of lineage, our Chief Instructor Colin Wee was awarded a teaching certificate by his teacher Shodai Bryan Robbins, from Yokage Aikijujutsu and the American Karate and Taekwondo Federation. This great honour was accompanied by a message from Shodai Robbins that read:

I can't think of many people that I have come into contact with in over 30 years as a martial artist that I would feel comfortable with giving them this honor; you have my complete confidence that you will use this instrument to enhance your art and promote outstanding students!!

Shodai Bryan Robbins is a student of Grand Master Keith Yates, who learned Taekwondo from Allen Steen who learned it from Great Grand Master Jhoon Rhee.

In recent years, through affiliation with Hanshi Tim White, Director of Molum Combat Arts Association, Colin has been promoted into Master-level black belt ranking and has been awarded Sho Go licenses through MLCAA. His on-going relationship with MLCAA continues his path as an instructor, development of martial arts content, and promotiong of martial arts on a global basis.

Taekwondo Patterns

HRGB uses the Chang Hon set of Taekwondo patterns (generically called 'kata' in Japanese) of the mid 1950s as a syllabus to train beginners in combat applications, drills, and to communicate instructor experience. Each pattern contains legitimate and effective techniques that can be used in a combative or self defence scenario. At black belt and beyond, we learn a mix of Taekwondo and Shotokan patterns. The patterns to black belt are as follows:

Belt Rankings

Similar to other styles, there are 9 levels to Black Belt. Coloured belt gradings are typically held at 4 month intervals, and all members are required to attend all gradings unless directed not to by their instructor. The beginner belt ranks are white, yellow, orange, and orange/green tip. The intermediate belt ranks are green, and blue. The senior student belts are purple, brown 3, brown 2, and brown 1.

Our school recognises and honours belt ranks from other styles and systems. An orientation and testing period will be discussed on a case-to-case basis.
